Join us in the dunes at the site of the shipwrecked "Sea King." Heels are not recommended, and in fact shoes are entirely optional for this portion of the evening! (In the event of inclement weather, we will relocate the ceremony to the reception site in Loveladies.)

OTHER ACTIVITIES

SURF - Interested in a private surf lesson or getting a local's leads on the best spots? Call Bob Selfridge to schedule a session at least two weeks in advance: 609-848-3700

BIKE - Visit LBI DreamMakers (Central Ave @ 8th St.) to rent bikes for a few hours or for the whole weekend.

BEACH - Beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, etc can be rented at LBI DreamMakers (Central Ave @ 8th St.), or you may be able to score end-of-season deals at the Islander, our local five-and-dime / hardware store. Life guards will be on duty at 9th St. and 25th St.

BREAKFAST - Swing by How You Brewin’ in Viking Village for a cold brew en route to the beach, or stop by the Inlet Deli - sited in Barnegat Light's turn-of-the-century Post Office (4th @ Broadway) - for coffee, newspapers, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, and LBI's famous coffee cake.

BRUNCH - For a leisurely brunch, check out Daymark (Broadway @ 4th) or Moustache Bill's (Broadway @ 8th), but be prepared for a wait at the latter -- it closes at noon and people have been lining up for the famous Cyclops Pancake ever since the diner was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

LUNCH - Visit Off the Hook (20th @ Bayview) for classic seafood options, lemonade, and outdoor picnic tables, or sit on the deck at Kubel's (7th @ Bayview) - our favorite year-round watering hole (recently visited by Anthony Bourdain!).

NATURE - Climb the 217 steps of Old Barney (built 1857-1858), or go for a stroll down the jetty and around the maritime forest and dunes of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park to learn about local flora and fauna. For all you birders, Barnegat Inlet is a hot spot; you may want to bring your binocs.

VIKING VILLAGE- Historic Viking Village (19th @ Bayview) has a handful of little antique, jewelry and surf shops, plus a fantastic fish monger and dock tour that takes you through the ins and outs of the scallop and long line industries. Don't miss a glimpse of the Lindsay L, a scallop boat docked here, that played a starring role as the Hannah Boden in the film "A Perfect Storm."

BARNEGAT LIGHT MUSEUM AND GARDENS - Stop by this sweet little history museum in Barnegat Light's old one-room schoolhouse (Central Ave @ 5th) to get a sense of how the town has evolved since it was founded in 1692. If you're lucky, you'll get a tour from our favorite octogenarians, Harry and Mary, who grew up in Barnegat Light and are volunteer docents at the museum.

AIRPORTS

The closest airports are:

Newark (EWR) - 94 miles
Philadelphia (PHL) - 80 miles
Atlantic City (ACY) - 46 miles

(We strongly advise against flying into JFK or La Guardia, as that would add multiple hours - in traffic - to your journey.)

CAR

We'll be candid: Long Beach Island is tough to get to... but that's part of why it's so charming. The simplest way to get to LBI is by car, so if you have one or can rent one at the airport, that's your surest bet.

CAR SERVICE

If you aren't up for renting a car, Jersey has plenty of car service companies. This one specializes in LBI for airport pickups and more. (And while we're on the subject of car services, please note that Uber and Lyft are very spotty on LBI!)

BUS

One company recently started running buses directly from Manhattan and Newark Airport to LBI. Visit this website for schedules and rates.

NJ TRANSIT

If you live in the tri-state area and want to get to LBI without a car, you can take NJ Transit bus service to Manahawkin, NJ and then call a car service. This website breaks it down.

LBI SHUTTLE

This is less about getting here, more about getting around once you're here: LBI has a free shuttle service that runs the full 18 mile length of the island from 10am-11pm on weekends.

accommodations

HOUSE RENTALS

For those bringing kids, coming as a crew, or looking to stay for a longer vacation, Long Beach Island has plenty of house rental options. The key will to be book early. We strongly recommend limiting your search to Barnegat Light or Loveladies - both on the northern end of LBI. (Pro tip: don't get fooled into renting in Barnegat, NJ - which is on the main land!)

Airbnb and VRBO have fewer options than local realtors, so if you're striking out online call Stacey Ghigliotty (609-618-3673) or Arlene Morrison (609-290-9112) at Berkshire Hathaway. Another option is Island Realty LBI in Barnegat Light (609-494-8822).

THE SAND CASTLE

We've held four double-occupancy rooms at this fancier bed and breakfast, which does not allow children or dogs. Lovely pool and gorgeous sunsets due to its location on the bay. Call Nancy at 609-494-6555 and mention that you are attending the Hand/Hynes wedding. UPDATE: Fully booked.

THE NORTH SHORE INN

Barnegat Light, NJ 08006

HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS

151 Route 72 West
Manahawkin, NJ 08050
609-481-6100

Love the familiarity of a good old Holiday Inn Express? Decided to come to our wedding at the last minute? There is a Holiday Inn Express on the main land with an indoor pool and that classic continental breakfast, but we're including this option with a few caveats: it's a 20ish minute drive to Barnegat Light from this hotel (so we'd only recommend it if you have a car), and rooms won't be available to book until August 15 or later (due to other weddings in the area).

ELLA'S MOTEL

1709 Central Ave. @ 18th Street
Barnegat Light, NJ 08006
$275 total for Fri/Sat nights

We have five rooms held at Ella's under Hand/Hynes. Please call Autumn directly at (609) 494-3200 to book one of those rooms.

FOOD52

We've set up a traditional registry at Food52, but we'd be equally delighted if you wanted to make a donation to one of our favorite nonprofit organizations in lieu of a wedding gift.

IOBY

Jamie is on the board of ioby ("in our back yards"), a national nonprofit organization that supports local neighborhood leaders to grow and implement great ideas one block at a time.

ALMOND CAKE

So many people asked for our wedding cake recipe that we figured we'd share it here. Click below for the full recipe on David Lebovitz's blog. Thanks again to Jamie's mom Ginny Hand for making TEN of them!
